Cheers, Jamie. I've not seen either of the film versions. I'm glad! - pleased that I read this book having no idea what the story was or how it played out. Structurally, this novel would be very difficult - impossible, really - to replicate in film, as the suspense comes from knowing the inner workings of the killer's mind, but at the same time not knowing his identity. No way to do that in a film, although now I've read it I might, one day, seek out the 1956 film version out of curiosity.

Nice review. Sounds a book worth seeking out. I've not read it, but have seen the 1991 film adaptation starring Matt Dillon and Sean Young (she is NOT good in the film) - there was also a 1956 version which from all accounts sounds as if it was more successful, but I've not managed to see that adaptation yet.

She's great - she's incredibly prolific but all of her books have real literary quality. The first I read by her was Blonde, a fictionalised exploration of the inner life of Marilyn Monroe - that was about 10 yrs ago and I've loved her ever since. Zombie is like nothing else she's ever written - you're right, it is horrendous but also incredibly fascinating.
